Butter's verdict on Surfer

G2: 4.8/5 (~550 reviews)

Reviewers say Surfer suits content teams that want writing guidance and AI visibility tracking in the same workflow, especially if they already use the Content Editor. Their main limitation is cost and credit caps, and independent reviewers say teams that only need tracking may get more depth from a dedicated tool.

What Surfer does well

  • Content Editor that G2 reviewers find clear and easy to learn
  • AI Tracker covers five engines on Pro and higher
  • Fast tracker setup that suggests prompts and competitors
  • Gap reports tie AI visibility findings to content fixes

Where Surfer falls short

  • Reviewers flag high cost and tight credit limits
  • Standard plan tracks ChatGPT only, weekly
  • No Claude, Copilot or Grok tracking
  • Keyword research is thinner than a full SEO suite

Surfer pricing and plans

Surfer's pricing page lists five tiers with yearly billing. Discovery is $49/mo and covers 120 documents and 10 tracked pages, with no AI tracking. Standard is $99/mo with 360 documents, 50 pages, three seats and 25 prompts refreshed weekly, but on ChatGPT only. Pro is $182/mo and adds five brand workspaces, five seats, 200 pages and 50 prompts refreshed daily across all five supported engines. Peace of Mind is $299/mo with 100 daily prompts, 500 pages and ten seats. Enterprise is custom. If you only want monitoring, there is also a standalone AI Search Analytics plan at $82/mo yearly with 50 daily prompts. Monthly billing costs more: TechRadar's October 2026 review lists $95, $119, $219 and $359 for the tracker, Standard, Pro and Peace of Mind. The site has a Start for Free button but gives no trial length. Confirm current plans on Surfer's site.

What reviewers say about Surfer

What users like about Surfer

Surfer holds a 4.8/5 rating on G2 from more than 540 reviews. Reviewers praise the Content Editor for showing clearly what a page needs to compete, and they find it easy to learn. TechRadar's AI Tracker review found that setup was fast: entering a domain generated a brand profile, a set of buyer-style prompts and a list of competitors. That review also liked the Mention Gap and fan-out query reports, because they point to specific pages and topics to work on. Surfer says the tracker captures the answers real users see, not raw API output.

Common complaints about Surfer

Cost and credit limits are the most common G2 complaints. Several reviewers also say its keyword research is thinner than a full SEO suite like Semrush. Independent reviewers warn that chasing a high Content Score can produce stiff, over-optimized copy, and that AI-written drafts need careful editing. On the tracker, TechRadar found the blended Visibility Score hard to interpret and saw readings swing within a single week. It also noted that Claude, Copilot and Grok are not tracked.

Who Surfer is for (and who should skip it)

Choose Surfer if

  • Your team writes and refreshes a lot of content and wants on-page guidance plus AI visibility data in one tool.
  • You already use Surfer and want AI tracking without adding another vendor.
  • You want AI tracking findings tied to content fixes, not just a dashboard.

Skip Surfer if

  • You only need AI visibility tracking. Dedicated trackers like Peec AI, Otterly.AI or Profound go deeper on prompts and engines.
  • You need Claude or Copilot coverage, which Surfer does not offer.
  • You need full keyword and backlink research. Semrush AI Toolkit or Ahrefs Brand Radar sit inside fuller SEO suites.

How we researched Surfer

We built this page from Surfer's published pricing and product information, user reviews on G2, and independent reviews linked below. Where sources disagree, we say so or leave the claim out. We haven't been paid by Surfer to write this page, and affiliate links never change what we say.

Surfer FAQs

How much does Surfer cost?

Paid plans start at $49/mo billed yearly for Discovery. AI tracking starts with Standard at $99/mo (ChatGPT only) or the standalone AI Search Analytics plan at $82/mo. Monthly billing costs more.

Does Surfer have a free trial?

The pricing page offers a Start for Free option but does not say how long it lasts or what it includes. Check Surfer's site before you sign up.

Which AI engines does Surfer's AI Tracker cover?

On Pro, Peace of Mind and AI Search Analytics it tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. Standard tracks ChatGPT only, with weekly refreshes.

Is Surfer good for agencies?

It can be. Pro includes five brand workspaces and Peace of Mind removes the workspace cap, subject to fair use. Agencies running many clients should compare per-client cost with a dedicated tracker.

What are the best Surfer alternatives?

Clearscope is the closest content-optimization rival. For tracking alone, consider Peec AI, Otterly.AI or Profound. For a broader SEO suite with AI features, consider Semrush AI Toolkit.
