August 2026 spam update

THE SHORT ANSWER

The August 2026 spam update was a routine, two to three day improvement to Google's automated spam detection. Sites that follow Google's spam policies generally have nothing to fix.

The August 2026 spam update was the third spam update Google confirmed in 2026. It started on August 18, 2026, and Google marked it complete on August 21, 2026. The Google Search Status Dashboard lists the total rollout time as 2 days and 16 hours. Like most spam updates, it came with very little detail from Google. What Google said

Google's note on the Search Status Dashboard read: "Released the August 2026 spam update, which applies globally and to all languages. The rollout may take a few days to complete." On August 21, Google posted: "The rollout was complete as of August 21, 2026."

According to Search Engine Roundtable, Google also said on LinkedIn: "This is a normal spam update, and it will roll out for all languages and locations." When some site owners suggested the update had started before the announcement, Google's John Mueller told Search Engine Roundtable: "We don't roll them out beforehand."

The announcement linked to Google's spam updates documentation, which explains that spam updates are notable improvements to Google's automated spam detection systems, including its AI based system called SpamBrain.

Who was affected

Google did not share specifics. It did not name the types of spam targeted, and Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google would not say what percentage of searches were affected. In general, spam updates are aimed at sites that break Google's spam policies.

Search Engine Roundtable collected reports from site owners in forums and comments. Some reported sharp traffic drops, including lost Google Discover and Google News referrals, while one said an earlier problem appeared to be fixed after the update. These are individual, unverified accounts, and drops during a rollout are not always caused by the update itself.

What to do if your traffic changed

  1. Check the dates first. This rollout ran from August 18 to August 21, 2026. A drop that started well before or after those dates probably has another cause, such as a site change, seasonality, or a different Google update.
  2. Compare periods in Search Console. In the Performance report, compare a few weeks after the rollout ended with a similar stretch before it began. Look at which pages and queries lost clicks, not only the overall total.
  3. Review Google's spam policies honestly. Read the spam policies and check your site against them. Pay attention to pages made mainly to rank rather than to help people, content produced at scale with little added value, hidden text or links, and third party content hosted on your domain.
  4. Fix real problems, then give it time. Google's spam updates documentation says improvement is not immediate. Its systems may need months to learn that a site now complies.
  5. If you find nothing wrong, keep building for people. Not every drop during a spam update is caused by the update. Keep publishing useful, original content for your customers, using Google's helpful content guidance as a checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Did the August 2026 spam update start before Google announced it?

Google says no. When asked, John Mueller told Search Engine Roundtable, "We don't roll them out beforehand." Ranking changes before August 18 most likely had another cause.

Was this a link spam update?

Google did not describe it as one. It called it a normal spam update that applied to all languages and locations, and it did not say which types of spam it focused on.

Should my small business worry about this update?

Spam updates are aimed at sites that break Google's spam policies. If your site follows those policies and you saw no traffic change between August 18 and August 21, 2026, there is nothing you need to do.
