February 2026 Discover update

THE SHORT ANSWER

The February 2026 Discover core update changed what Google shows in its Discover feed for English language users in the US. It mainly matters if your site gets Discover traffic; regular search results were not the stated focus.

The February 2026 Discover update, which Google's announcement called the February 2026 Discover core update, was a change to Google Discover, the personalized feed of articles Google shows on mobile. It applied to English language users in the United States. It started on February 5, 2026, and Google marked it complete on February 27, 2026, for a total rollout time of 21 days and 17 hours on the Google Search Status Dashboard. Google had said it could take up to two weeks. For the rest of this year's changes, see all Google algorithm updates.

What Google said

On its Search Status Dashboard, Google said it had released the "February 2026 Discover core update for English language users in the US," that it may expand to other countries and languages later, and that its general core update and Discover guidance applies. On February 27, it posted: "The rollout was complete as of February 27, 2026."

Google explained the goals in a Search Central blog post. As summarized by Search Engine Land and Search Engine Journal, the update aimed to:

  • Show people more locally relevant content from websites based in their country.
  • Reduce sensational content and clickbait.
  • Highlight more in depth, original, and timely content from sites with demonstrated expertise in a topic.

Search Engine Land reported that Google said its systems judge expertise topic by topic, so a local news site with a dedicated gardening section could be seen as expert on gardening. Google also said that in testing, people found Discover "more useful and worthwhile" with the update, and that it planned to expand to all countries and languages in the months ahead, without giving a date.

What changed

Google did not publish data on how many sites were affected. Search Engine Journal reported analysis from NewzDash showing stronger regional personalization after the update. For example, domains local to New York appeared about five times more often in a New York feed than in a California feed. Search Engine Land suggested the focus on local relevance may reduce Discover traffic for sites outside the US that publish news for a US audience.

For most small businesses, Discover is a minor traffic source compared with regular search. It matters most to publishers, blogs, and businesses that regularly post timely articles.

What to do if your traffic changed

  1. Look at Discover separately. Search Console has a dedicated Discover performance report. Check it on its own, since this update was about the Discover feed rather than regular search results.
  2. Compare the right dates. The rollout ran from February 5 to February 27, 2026. Google's core update guidance suggests waiting at least a week after an update finishes, then comparing with the period before it began.
  3. Review Google's Discover guidance. Google's Discover documentation explains how content appears in the feed. Avoid misleading or exaggerated headlines and thumbnails, since reducing clickbait was a stated goal.
  4. Write about what you know. Because Google says it judges expertise topic by topic, focus your articles on the subjects your business genuinely knows well, and make them original and useful.
  5. Use the core update guidance. Google said its general core updates guidance applies. That guidance favors lasting improvements to content over quick fixes.

Frequently asked questions

Did the update apply outside the United States?

At launch it applied only to English language users in the US. Google said it planned to expand to all countries and languages in the months ahead but did not give a date.

Does my small business need to worry about Discover?
