AI visibility is how often, and how favorably, a brand shows up in answers from AI assistants and AI search tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Google's AI features. It covers being named, being recommended and being cited as a source.
This page explains what AI visibility means, why it is harder to pin down than a Google ranking, how it is measured with prompt sets and a handful of core metrics, and how to start tracking it without falling for vanity numbers.
What is AI Visibility?
In classic SEO, visibility usually means where your pages rank and how many impressions they earn. AI visibility asks a different question: when someone asks an AI tool about your category, does your brand come up, and in what light?
There are three layers to it. The first is presence: is your brand mentioned at all? The second is attribution: does the AI link to or cite your website, or does it pull its facts about you from third parties? The third is framing: is your brand recommended, described accurately and positioned well against competitors, or is it mentioned as an afterthought or with outdated information?
The term grew out of the research and practice around generative engine optimization. A 2023 research paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, framed the problem of measuring how visible a source is inside AI-generated answers and reported that content changes could raise that visibility by up to 40% in its benchmark. Since then, a whole category of tracking tools has formed around the idea.
Why AI Visibility matters
More people now start research in an AI assistant instead of a search box. When an assistant answers with a short list of recommended vendors, the brands on that list get considered and the rest often do not. If your brand is missing, you may never see the lost demand in your analytics because no click ever happened.
AI visibility also matters because AI answers shape perception even when no one clicks. A model that describes your pricing wrong or recommends a competitor for your core use case is effectively doing sales for someone else.
Be honest about the limits, though. AI answers are not stable. A study run by SparkToro with Gumshoe.ai, covered by Search Engine Journal, ran the same brand-recommendation prompts dozens of times and found ChatGPT and Google's AI features returned the identical list less than 1% of the time. That means any single answer is a snapshot, not a ranking. The same study found that how often a brand appears across many runs was far more consistent than its position, which is why frequency-based metrics are more trustworthy than "AI rank" numbers.
How AI Visibility works
Where AI answers come from
An AI assistant can talk about your brand from two places. One is what the model absorbed during training. The other is live retrieval: many assistants search the web, read a few pages and write an answer grounded in them, often with citations. Your visibility depends on both. Training-era knowledge reflects how widely and consistently your brand was discussed across the web. Retrieval-era visibility depends on whether your pages and the pages that mention you can be found, crawled and quoted.
Prompt sets
Because there are no keyword search volumes for AI chats, measurement starts with a prompt set: a list of realistic questions your buyers might ask. A good set mixes unbranded category questions ("best payroll software for restaurants"), comparison questions ("X vs. Y"), problem questions ("how do I reduce staff turnover") and branded questions ("is X worth it"). These prompts are then run repeatedly across several AI platforms, a practice usually called prompt testing.
Core metrics
- Mention rate: the share of relevant answers that name your brand, whether or not they link to you. AirOps, in its guide to measuring AI search visibility, describes a headline visibility score built essentially this way: answers mentioning your brand divided by total relevant answers.
- Citation rate: how often your own URLs are cited as sources. This is related to, but separate from, mentions. You can be mentioned without being cited, and an AI citation of your page does not always come with a recommendation.
- Share of voice: your mentions or citations compared with named competitors across the same prompts. See AI share of voice.
- Sentiment: whether mentions are positive, neutral or negative, and whether the facts are right. See AI brand sentiment.
- Drift: how these numbers move over time as models and their sources change.
First-party data
Some platforms now report citation data directly. In February 2026 Microsoft launched AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools as a public preview, showing how often a site is cited in Copilot, Bing's AI summaries and some partner integrations, along with page-level counts and sample grounding queries. Microsoft notes these figures reflect citation frequency, not ranking or placement inside an answer.
AI Visibility in practice: an example
Imagine a hypothetical regional accounting firm that wants to know how visible it is in AI answers. It writes 40 prompts, such as "best small business accountant in Denver" and "how much does a CPA cost for an LLC," and runs each one 10 times across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude.
The results: the firm is mentioned in 12% of answers, mostly for branded and local prompts. Its own website is cited in only 3% of answers; most mentions trace back to a local business directory and a two-year-old news article. Two competitors appear in more than 30% of answers, and both have detailed service pages with clear pricing ranges and regular local press coverage. One answer lists an old office address.
That picture gives the firm a concrete plan: fix the outdated listing, publish clearer pricing and service content, and earn fresh coverage. It then reruns the same prompt set monthly to see whether the numbers move.
How to measure AI Visibility
- Define the prompts that matter. Build 25 to 100 prompts grouped by topic and funnel stage, based on sales calls, support tickets and keyword research. Keep branded prompts separate so they do not inflate unbranded results.
- Pick the platforms your buyers use. Most brands should cover at least ChatGPT, Google's AI features, Perplexity and one of Gemini, Claude or Copilot.
- Run each prompt multiple times. Because answers vary run to run, repeat each prompt several times per platform and report percentages, not single outcomes.
- Record mentions, citations and framing separately. Log whether the brand appears, which URLs are cited, which competitors appear and whether the description is accurate and positive.
- Benchmark against competitors. Track three to five named rivals across the same prompts so share of voice has context.
- Add first-party and traffic data. Pair prompt testing with Bing's AI Performance report and AI referral traffic in your analytics to see whether visibility turns into visits.
- Re-test on a fixed schedule. Monthly is a sensible default. Keep the prompt set stable so trends reflect real change rather than new questions.
Common mistakes and misconceptions
"We rank number one in ChatGPT." AI tools do not have a stable ranked list. Answers change in brand, order and length from run to run, so a position number from one test means little. Report how often you appear across many runs instead.
"If we rank well on Google, we are visible in AI." Strong SEO helps, especially for assistants that retrieve from search indexes, but it is not the same thing. AI answers lean heavily on third-party sources such as reviews, forums and press, so a brand can rank well and still be missing from AI recommendations.
"Mentions and citations are the same metric." They are not. A model may mention you based on training data without linking anywhere, or cite your page for a definition without recommending you. Track both.
"One tool's score tells the whole story." Different tools use different prompts, platforms and methods, so their scores rarely match. Treat any single score as directional and focus on trends within one consistent method.
AI Visibility vs. AI Share of Voice
AI visibility is the broad concept: your overall presence, attribution and framing across AI answers. AI share of voice is one metric within it that measures your presence relative to competitors. You can raise your visibility while your share of voice falls if competitors are growing faster, which is why both are worth watching.
How Butter approaches AI Visibility
We start with fundamentals. Before chasing AI-specific tactics, we make sure a brand's site can be crawled and indexed, its key facts are consistent across the web, and its pages answer real buyer questions clearly.
Our GEO plans start at $399/month and include monthly AI prompt testing, indexing strategy, schema markup guidance, knowledge graph submissions and on-page recommendations. That gives clients a repeatable baseline and a clear list of what to fix.
Because so much AI visibility comes from what others say about you, we often pair GEO with public relations for earned media coverage. We report trends over time and avoid promising specific placements, since no one controls what an AI model says.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if my brand shows up in ChatGPT?
Write a list of questions your customers would ask, run them in ChatGPT several times each, and record whether your brand appears and which sources are cited. For anything beyond a quick check, use a consistent prompt set and repeat it monthly, or use a tracking tool that does this at scale.
What is a good AI visibility score?
There is no universal benchmark because scores depend on the prompts, platforms and method used. The most useful comparison is against your direct competitors on the same prompt set, and against your own score over time.
Can I improve AI visibility quickly?
Some fixes, like correcting outdated facts on your own site or listings, can show up in retrieval-based answers fairly fast. Changes that depend on training data or broad third-party coverage usually take months, and results are never guaranteed.
Is AI visibility the same as GEO?
No. GEO is the practice of optimizing for AI-generated answers, and AI visibility is the main outcome it tries to improve and measure. Think of GEO as the work and AI visibility as the scoreboard.
