Brand Mention

THE SHORT ANSWER

A brand mention is any reference to your company, product or founder on a website, publication, podcast, forum or social platform, with or without a link. Mentions shape reputation and how AI assistants describe your brand.

A brand mention is any time your company, product or founder is named on a website, in an article, on a podcast, in a forum thread or on social media. It counts whether or not the mention includes a link back to your site.

For years, SEO teams treated mentions mostly as a chance to ask for a link. That is changing. As AI assistants increasingly answer questions by summarizing what the web says about a topic, how often and how well your brand is discussed across trusted sources has become a core part of visibility.

What is a brand mention?

A brand mention is a reference to your brand name on a page or platform you don't control. There are two main types:

  • Linked mentions: the brand name appears with a hyperlink to your website. These also count as a backlink.
  • Unlinked mentions: the brand name appears as plain text with no link. Search Engine Land describes these as references that signal awareness but pass no link authority on their own.

Mentions also differ by context. A product review on a trade site, a quote from your founder in a news story, a recommendation in a Reddit thread and a listing in a "best tools" roundup are all brand mentions, but they carry very different weight. Sentiment matters too. Being named as a cautionary tale is still a mention, just not a helpful one.

Why brand mentions matter for search and AI answers

In traditional SEO, links have long been a key way search engines discover pages. Google's SEO Starter Guide says most new pages it finds are discovered through links, and it calls word of mouth one of the most effective and lasting ways to promote a site. Mentions are what word of mouth looks like online.

Mentions also feed reputation. Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines (September 2025 version) tell human raters to research a site's reputation using independent sources, such as reviews, news articles and expert recommendations, rather than what a company says about itself. Raters do not set rankings directly, but the guidelines show what Google considers signs of a trustworthy brand, which ties directly to E-E-A-T.

The bigger shift is in AI search. AI assistants form their picture of a brand from what many sources say about it. A widely cited Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands (May 2025) found that branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with brand visibility in Google's AI Overviews, at 0.664, compared with 0.218 for backlinks. The authors stress that correlation is not causation, so treat this as a strong pattern rather than proof. Still, it lines up with how these systems work: if many credible pages associate your brand with a topic, an AI summary of that topic is more likely to include you.

How brand mentions work as a signal

They connect your brand to topics

When a reputable article lists your company among the best options for a specific need, it creates an association between your brand and that topic. Repeat that across many independent sources, and search engines and language models have consistent evidence that you belong in the conversation.

They confirm your entity

Mentions help search engines recognize your brand as a distinct entity. Google explains in its knowledge panel documentation that it builds facts from public sources across the web. Consistent name, description and category across many mentions make your brand easier to identify and harder to confuse with others.

They shape sentiment and reputation

The words around your name matter. Reviews, forum discussions and articles all carry tone. AI answers often summarize that tone, so a pattern of complaints in public forums can show up in how an assistant describes you.

They can turn into links and traffic

Linked mentions drive referral traffic directly. Unlinked mentions on relevant sites are often good outreach targets, since the author already knows and discusses your brand.

Brand mentions in practice

Consider a hypothetical project management tool for architecture firms. Its website is solid and ranks for a handful of keywords, but when someone asks an AI assistant "what's the best project management software for architects," the tool never appears. The assistant lists the same four bigger names every time.

Looking at where those competitors are mentioned reveals the gap. They appear in trade publication roundups, architecture podcasts, industry association resource pages and active discussions on professional forums. The smaller tool appears almost nowhere outside its own site.

A sensible plan would be to pitch the founder as a guest on niche podcasts, contribute useful data to trade publications, join relevant directories and comparison sites, and encourage happy customers to share honest reviews. None of this guarantees AI placement, but it builds the kind of third-party footprint that AI answers tend to reflect.

How to earn more (and better) brand mentions

  1. Audit where you're mentioned today. Use a brand monitoring tool or targeted searches (for example, your brand name excluding your own domain) to see who talks about you, in what context and with what sentiment.
  2. Map where competitors are mentioned. Look at the publications, roundups, podcasts and communities that name your competitors but not you. These are your best opportunities.
  3. Create something worth citing. Original data, useful free tools, clear expert commentary and well-researched guides give writers a reason to name you.
  4. Do digital PR. Offer journalists and editors timely expertise, respond to relevant source requests and build relationships with writers in your niche.
  5. Show up in communities authentically. Answer questions in forums and groups where your audience gathers. Be helpful first. Overt self-promotion tends to backfire.
  6. Keep your name consistent. Use the same brand name and short description in bios, press kits and profiles so mentions clearly point to one entity.
  7. Reclaim valuable unlinked mentions. When a relevant, reputable page names you without a link, a polite note asking for one is reasonable. Don't push if they decline.
  8. Track mentions in AI answers. Run regular prompt testing across AI assistants to see whether and how your brand appears, and watch for changes over time.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

  • "Only linked mentions matter." Links remain valuable, but unlinked mentions still build awareness, reputation and topic association, which matter for AI visibility.
  • Buying mentions in bulk. Paid placements on low-quality sites or spammy "sponsored" networks add little value and can violate search engine spam policies when they involve links. Quality and relevance beat volume.
  • Ignoring sentiment. A spike in mentions driven by complaints is not a win. Monitor what people actually say.
  • Chasing irrelevant coverage. A mention on a general site with no connection to your field does less than one on a respected niche publication your customers read.
  • Expecting quick results. Reputation builds slowly. AI systems and search engines reflect the web over time, not overnight.

Brand mention vs. backlink

A backlink is a clickable link from another site to yours. A brand mention is any reference to your brand, linked or not. Every linked brand mention is a backlink, but many backlinks don't mention your brand at all (for example, a link with generic anchor text like "this guide"), and many mentions have no link.

Both matter. Backlinks help with discovery and have long been part of how search engines assess pages. Mentions shape how your brand is perceived and discussed, which increasingly influences AI-generated answers.

How Butter approaches brand mentions

At Butter, we treat brand mentions as one of the core building blocks of AI visibility. Each month, our GEO plan includes one AI-crawlable content citation and backlink, placed on relevant, quality sites, plus off-page recommendations on where a brand should be showing up next.

We use monthly AI prompt testing to see which brands assistants name for a client's key questions and where those competitors are mentioned around the web. That gap analysis tells us which publications, directories and communities to prioritize. For brands that want to go further, our Public Relations add-on focuses on earning coverage in outlets that matter to their audience. We don't buy bulk mentions, and we don't promise placement in any AI answer, because nobody can honestly guarantee that. If you're curious how this fits into a broader strategy, our GEO service page explains it.

Frequently asked questions

Do unlinked brand mentions help SEO?

Unlinked mentions don't pass link authority, but they build awareness, reputation and associations between your brand and your topic. Google's rater guidelines emphasize independent sources when judging reputation. They also appear to matter for AI visibility, based on correlation studies like Ahrefs' analysis of AI Overviews.

How do I find out where my brand is mentioned?

Brand monitoring tools can alert you to new mentions across the web and social media. You can also search your brand name while excluding your own site. For AI platforms, run regular prompts in assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to see how they describe you.

Are brand mentions more important than backlinks for AI search?

Research such as Ahrefs' 2025 study found mentions correlated more strongly with AI Overview visibility than backlinks did. Correlation is not causation, though. The practical takeaway is to invest in both, with more attention to being discussed on relevant, trusted sites.

Can negative brand mentions hurt me?

They can shape how people and AI assistants describe your brand. Google's rater guidelines also tell raters to consider reputation from reviews and independent sources. Respond professionally to legitimate complaints, fix underlying issues and keep building positive, accurate coverage.
