Google Gemini

THE SHORT ANSWER

Google Gemini is Google's family of multimodal AI models and the name of its AI assistant app. Gemini models power AI Overviews and AI Mode, and the app can ground answers in Google Search.

Google Gemini is the name for both Google's family of AI models and the Gemini app, Google's AI assistant. The models power many Google products, including AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search, while the app lets people chat, research, write and create with AI directly.

For marketers, Gemini matters in two ways. It is the engine behind Google's AI search features, and the Gemini app is itself a place where people ask for recommendations and research. This guide explains what Gemini is, how it uses web content, and how site owners can control and improve their visibility.

What is Google Gemini?

Gemini is Google's flagship family of multimodal large language models, meaning they can work with text, images, audio and video. The Gemini app, which launched as Bard in March 2023, is the consumer assistant available on the web and in mobile apps.

Gemini has grown into one of the largest AI products in the world. In August 2026, Google said the Gemini app passed one billion monthly users. Google also ships new Gemini models directly into Search: when Gemini 3 launched in November 2025, Google said it was the first time a Gemini model shipped in Search on day one. As of May 2026, Google AI Mode uses Gemini 3.5 Flash as its default model. Model names and features change quickly, so treat these as accurate as of October 2026.

Why Google Gemini matters for marketers

Gemini sits at the center of Google's AI strategy. That means it influences how your brand appears in at least three places: AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search, the Gemini app itself, and Gemini features across Google products like Chrome and Workspace.

When people ask the Gemini app for advice, such as "which project management tool is best for a small agency," it can draw on Google Search to answer. If your content is well indexed and clearly answers those questions, you have a chance to be included. If not, competitors fill the space.

How Gemini uses web content

Training data

Like other large language models, Gemini models learn from large amounts of data during training. This shapes what the model "knows" about topics and brands before it ever searches the web.

Grounding with Google Search

For current or specific information, Gemini can look things up. Google describes this as grounding: supplying content from the Google Search index to the model when a prompt is answered. In Google's developer documentation, Grounding with Google Search lets the model decide whether a search would help, generate queries, run them and write an answer with citations linking text to source URLs.

Gemini inside Google Search

In AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini models write answers from pages in Google's index, using techniques like query fan-out to search many subtopics at once. Google's guidance for site owners says there are no special requirements for these features beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet.

Controlling how Gemini uses your content

Google offers a robots.txt token called Google-Extended. According to Google's crawler documentation, it lets you control whether content Google crawls from your site may be used to train future Gemini models and for grounding in Gemini Apps and Grounding with Google Search on Vertex AI.

Two important details:

  • Google-Extended does not affect Google Search. Google says it doesn't affect inclusion in Search and isn't a ranking signal.
  • It doesn't control AI Overviews or AI Mode. Those are part of Search and governed by Googlebot and standard snippet controls like nosnippet and max-snippet.

So blocking Google-Extended may reduce your content's use in the Gemini app's answers, which could cost you visibility there. Make that choice deliberately, not by default.

How to improve your visibility in Gemini

  1. Start with Google indexing. Gemini's grounding and Google's AI search features rely on the Google Search index. Verify your site in Search Console, submit sitemaps and fix indexing issues.
  2. Decide on Google-Extended intentionally. If visibility in the Gemini app matters to you, don't block it out of habit. If you do block it, know that it won't change your Search rankings.
  3. Answer questions clearly. Use descriptive headings that mirror real questions, with a short, direct answer at the start of each section.
  4. Help Google understand your brand as an entity. Consistent business information, accurate schema markup and a current Google Business Profile help Google connect facts to your brand.
  5. Build topical depth. Cover the follow-up questions around your main topics with connected pages, so your site is useful across many related searches.
  6. Test regularly. Ask the Gemini app the questions your customers ask, and record whether and how your brand appears.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

  • Thinking Google-Extended blocks AI Overviews. It doesn't. AI features in Search follow Googlebot and snippet controls.
  • Treating Gemini as separate from SEO. Gemini's web answers lean heavily on Google's index, so SEO fundamentals still apply.
  • Assuming the model always knows the latest facts. Training data has a cutoff. Fresh information reaches Gemini answers through grounding, which depends on your pages being indexed.
  • Expecting a special Gemini file or markup. Google says no special files or schema are required for its AI search features.
