Service Area Business

THE SHORT ANSWER

A service area business serves customers at their location rather than at a storefront. In Google Business Profile, it hides its address and lists the areas it serves instead.

A service area business (SAB) is a business that serves customers at their location instead of having customers come to a storefront. A plumber who works from home and drives to customers across one county is a classic example. In Google Business Profile, that plumber hides their address and lists the cities or postal codes they cover instead.

For businesses like this, setting up the profile correctly matters a lot. Google has specific rules for service area businesses, and getting them wrong can lead to a suspended profile, which means disappearing from Google Maps and the local pack right when nearby customers are searching.

What is a service area business?

Google describes service area businesses as businesses without a storefront where they receive customers. Common examples include plumbers, electricians, house cleaners, mobile pet groomers, landscapers and roofers. The work happens at the customer's home or job site, not at the business's address.

In Google Business Profile, there are three setups:

  • Storefront business: shows an address where customers visit during stated hours.
  • Service area business: hides the address and shows a service area instead.
  • Hybrid business: shows a staffed storefront address and also lists a service area. Google's example is an auto repair shop that has a garage and also offers roadside service.

Even with a hidden address, a service area business still needs a real base of operations. Google uses it for verification, and it anchors the service area.

Why service area business setup matters

Breaking the rules can cost you the profile. Google says a business without a storefront where it receives customers must hide its business address. It also warns that creating multiple profiles for the same business in the same metro area can get an account suspended. For a business that gets most of its calls from Maps, a suspension can hit revenue quickly.

Local ranking still depends on relevance, distance and prominence. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. A service area business can't rank in every town it lists just by adding it to the profile. Being well reviewed and well known still matters.

AI answers draw on the same local data. When people ask AI assistants for a nearby service provider, those tools can draw on map listings, reviews and directory data. A complete, accurate profile and consistent business details across the web give those systems clearer information to work with.

How service area businesses work in Google Business Profile

Hiding the address

During setup, you tell Google you don't serve customers at your address. Your address is then hidden from the public profile. If you already show an address and you don't receive customers there, you should remove it. Hybrid businesses can keep their address visible only if the location is staffed and can receive customers during its stated hours.

Defining the service area

You can add up to 20 service areas, based on cities, postal codes or other areas. Google recommends that your overall area not extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time from where the business is based, while noting that a larger area may be appropriate for some businesses. Only one profile is allowed per metro area. If you have separate offices with their own staff in different cities, each can have its own profile and service area.

Eligibility limits

The Business Profile guidelines set some firm limits. Virtual offices and rented mailing addresses where the business doesn't operate aren't eligible, unless the office is staffed during business hours. Businesses that sell age-restricted products or services, such as alcohol, cannabis or weapons, aren't permitted to be service area businesses without a storefront.

Verification

Video recording is one of the verification methods Google may offer, depending on your profile. The video verification instructions ask for a live recording, made on a mobile device, that shows the location (such as street signs or nearby landmarks), the tools or equipment you use for the work, and proof that you manage the business, such as accessing business-only assets or showing a business document. Home-based businesses can film signs and landmarks in their neighborhood instead of their front door.

How to set up a service area business profile

  1. Choose the right type. Select that you don't serve customers at your address unless you have a staffed storefront that customers visit.
  2. Use your real base. Enter the address you actually operate from. Don't use a P.O. box or a virtual office.
  3. Set a realistic service area. List the cities or postal codes you genuinely serve, staying within Google's 20-area limit and the 2-hour driving guideline.
  4. Prepare for verification. Have your vehicle, tools, signage or business documents ready to show on video.
  5. Fill in the details. Add categories, services, hours, photos of real jobs and a description that matches what you do.
  6. Keep your details consistent. Use the same name and phone number everywhere. For SABs, NAP consistency mostly means name and phone, since the address is hidden.
  7. Build location pages carefully. On your website, create pages for the areas you serve with real, specific content. Avoid near-identical pages that only swap the town name, which can look like doorway pages.
  8. Earn reviews steadily. Ask every customer for a review. Strong review management supports the prominence part of local ranking.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

  • "Showing my home address will help me rank." If customers don't visit you there, Google's rules say to hide it. Showing it anyway risks suspension.
  • "More service areas means more rankings." Listing areas tells Google where you work. It doesn't guarantee visibility in each one, since distance and prominence still apply.
  • Creating extra profiles for nearby towns. Google allows one profile per metro area. Duplicate profiles for the same business can lead to suspension.
  • Using a virtual office. Rented addresses where the business doesn't operate aren't eligible unless staffed during business hours.
  • Stuffing the business name. Google's guidelines say including unnecessary information in your business name isn't permitted and can lead to suspension. Use your real business name.

Service area business vs. storefront business

A storefront business shows its address and expects customers to visit during set hours. A service area business hides its address and goes to customers instead. The distinction is about where customers are served, not whether you have an office. A hybrid business does both, but its storefront must be staffed and able to receive customers during the hours on the profile.

How Butter approaches service area businesses

Many of the businesses we work with in home services are service area businesses. We start by checking that the Business Profile is set up the right way for how the business actually operates: address hidden or shown correctly, service areas realistic and categories accurate. We also look for duplicate or outdated listings that could cause problems.

From there, we focus on what supports local SEO over time: useful service area pages on the website, LocalBusiness schema with a defined service area, consistent citations and a steady flow of genuine reviews. We can't control where Google ranks a profile, but we can make sure it follows the rules and gives Google and AI tools accurate information.

Frequently asked questions

Can a service area business show up in Google Maps?

Yes. Service area businesses appear in Maps and the local pack, but without a pin at a public address. Their visibility still depends on relevance, distance and prominence, like any other profile.

How many service areas can I add to Google Business Profile?

Google allows up to 20 service areas. It also recommends keeping the overall area within about 2 hours of driving time from your base, though it notes larger areas may suit some businesses.

Can I list my home address as a service area business?

You can use your home as the base, but you must hide the address if customers don't visit you there. Google uses the address for verification and to anchor your service area.

What is a hybrid service area business?

A hybrid business has a storefront that customers visit and also serves customers at their locations. It can show its address and a service area, as long as the storefront is staffed during its stated hours.
