Agentic commerce is shopping in which an AI agent does part of the work for the buyer: finding products, comparing options and, in some cases, completing the purchase. Instead of a person browsing several stores, an assistant like ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Mode researches and acts on their behalf.
For businesses, agentic commerce changes where buying decisions happen. If an agent is choosing which products to show and which store to buy from, your product data, policies and reputation need to be readable by machines as well as people.
What is agentic commerce?
Agentic commerce describes purchases that are discovered, shaped or completed by AI agents. It ranges from light help, such as an assistant suggesting three running shoes, to deeper delegation, such as an agent buying an item once its price drops below a limit the shopper set.
Several open protocols now aim to let agents and merchants talk to each other in a standard way. OpenAI and Stripe released the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) in September 2025. Google announced the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) the same month, and the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) in January 2026.
Why agentic commerce matters
Discovery is moving into AI answers. In March 2026, OpenAI expanded product discovery in ChatGPT Shopping with visual browsing and side-by-side comparisons, and said retailers including Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe's, Best Buy, The Home Depot and Wayfair had integrated ACP for discovery. If your products aren't in the data these systems use, you're less likely to be shown.
Checkout is still being worked out. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT in September 2025, starting with Etsy sellers. By March 2026, it said the first version "did not offer the level of flexibility" it wanted, and its merchant page now says purchases are completed on merchant-owned sites or apps. Google, meanwhile, is rolling out UCP-powered checkout in AI Mode and the Gemini app. The model is evolving, so flexibility matters more than betting on one approach.
Merchants keep the customer relationship, for now. Under both ACP and UCP, the retailer stays the merchant of record, handling payment, fulfillment and returns. Google's January 2026 announcement says "retailers remain the seller of record."
How agentic commerce works
Discovery through product data
Agents need structured product information: titles, prices, availability, images, reviews and shipping details. Merchants typically provide it through product feeds, such as Google Merchant Center or the product feed OpenAI accepts for ChatGPT, and through on-page schema markup. Shopify merchants reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, according to OpenAI.
Checkout through protocols
When an agent completes a purchase, it calls the merchant's systems in a standard way. In OpenAI's ACP documentation, ChatGPT collects buyer and payment details, then calls the merchant's endpoints to create a checkout session. The merchant validates the order, calculates tax and accepts or declines it. Google describes UCP as covering the whole journey, from discovery to post-purchase support, and as compatible with AP2, Agent2Agent and the Model Context Protocol.
Payments and proof of intent
Payment protocols focus on trust. Stripe's Shared Payment Token is scoped to a specific merchant and cart total, so the buyer's card details aren't exposed. AP2 uses cryptographically signed "mandates," such as an Intent Mandate and a Cart Mandate, that record what the user asked for and approved. Google said more than 60 organizations, including Mastercard, PayPal and American Express, collaborated on AP2.
How to prepare for agentic commerce
- Clean up your product data. Keep feeds complete and in sync with your site, including price, stock, variants, images and shipping costs.
- Match structured data to the page. Use Product and Offer markup that reflects what shoppers actually see, and fix errors flagged in Search Console.
- Make policies easy to find. State shipping times, return windows and warranties clearly, in plain text an agent can read.
- Check crawler access. Make sure the bots behind AI shopping can reach your product pages. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that block OAI-SearchBot won't appear in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still show up as navigational links.
- Use your platform's integrations. Commerce platforms are building connections to AI surfaces. Check what yours already supports before building custom work.
- Measure AI-driven visits. Track AI referral traffic in your analytics, so you can see whether discovery turns into sales.
Common mistakes and misconceptions
"Agents will do all the buying soon." Today, most agentic commerce is about discovery and comparison. OpenAI moved away from a standalone in-chat checkout in 2026, which shows how early the checkout side still is.
"It's only for big retailers." Large retailers were first to integrate, but platforms like Shopify connect many smaller merchants to AI surfaces through their existing catalogs.
"A product feed is enough." Feeds help, but agents also weigh reviews, third-party coverage and on-page content. Reputation still shapes which products get recommended.
"One protocol will win, so wait." ACP and UCP are both active, and they overlap. Good product data and clear policies help with every approach, so there's little reason to wait.
How Butter approaches agentic commerce
We don't build AI agents, product feed integrations or checkout connections, and there's no separate "agent optimization" product at Butter. Agent readiness overlaps heavily with the work we already do. Our GEO plan covers AI prompt testing, indexing strategy and schema markup guidance, which help AI systems find and read your key facts.
On the GEO+SEO plan, technical SEO fixes for broken links and crawl issues make pages easier for any automated visitor to use. When we review a site, we flag pricing, service details or forms that an agent would struggle with, and include those in our on-page recommendations. You can see how this fits on our GEO service page.
Frequently asked questions
What is an example of agentic commerce?
A shopper asks ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode for a carry-on suitcase under $200 with good reviews. The assistant compares options from several retailers, shows the best matches and links to checkout, or completes the purchase where that's supported.
What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol?
The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is an open standard co-developed by OpenAI and Stripe and released in September 2025. It lets merchants share product data with AI agents and, where supported, accept orders from them while staying the merchant of record.
Can AI agents buy from my store today?
It depends on the platform. Google is rolling out UCP-powered checkout with eligible retailers in AI Mode and Gemini. ChatGPT currently focuses on discovery and sends shoppers to merchant sites to complete purchases.
How do I get my products in front of AI shopping agents?
Start with complete, accurate product feeds and matching structured data, make sure AI crawlers can reach your product pages, and check which AI integrations your commerce platform already supports.
