ChatGPT Shopping

THE SHORT ANSWER

ChatGPT Shopping is the set of features in ChatGPT that helps people find, compare and research products, showing organic product results and linking to merchants where the purchase is completed.

ChatGPT Shopping is the set of features in ChatGPT that helps people find, compare and research products. When a question shows shopping intent, ChatGPT can show product cards with images, prices and reviews, compare items side by side and link to merchants where the purchase can be completed.

For businesses that sell online, ChatGPT Shopping is a new place where buyers make decisions. If your products aren't in the data ChatGPT uses, or your product information is thin or inconsistent, you may be left out of recommendations that shoppers increasingly trust.

What is ChatGPT Shopping?

ChatGPT Shopping is not a separate app. It's a set of shopping experiences inside ChatGPT, built on top of ChatGPT Search. It has developed in several steps:

  • April 2025: OpenAI added product results to ChatGPT, saying they were selected independently and were not ads.
  • September 2025: OpenAI launched Instant Checkout, powered by Stripe, letting US users buy from US Etsy sellers inside the chat. The two companies also released the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP).
  • November 2025: OpenAI introduced shopping research, which asks clarifying questions and builds a personalized buyer's guide.
  • March 2026: OpenAI refocused on product discovery, adding visual browsing and side-by-side comparisons, and said merchants could use their own checkout experiences.

OpenAI's merchant page now says shoppers discover and compare products in ChatGPT but complete purchases on merchant-owned sites or apps, and that shopping is currently live for US users.

Why ChatGPT Shopping matters

It reaches a large audience. OpenAI said ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, as TechCrunch reported. Product research is a natural fit for conversational questions like "best running shoes for flat feet under $150."

Results are organic. OpenAI's help article on shopping says product results are chosen independently, aren't ads and aren't influenced by OpenAI partnerships. It adds that ads are separate from product results. That makes product data and reputation, not ad spend, the main levers for appearing in results.

Major retailers are already in. OpenAI said Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe's, Best Buy, The Home Depot and Wayfair had integrated ACP for discovery, and that Shopify merchants reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog.

How ChatGPT Shopping works

How products are chosen

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT shows products when a query suggests shopping intent and picks items it considers relevant, using the query and context such as Memory. It weighs factors like price, reviews and ease of use, with the weighting depending on the request. Labels like "Budget-friendly" and review summaries are generated by the model.

Where the product data comes from

OpenAI says ChatGPT uses structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers, such as prices and descriptions, plus other third-party content. Merchants can share product feeds through SFTP, APIs or supported commerce platforms. Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated. Other merchants apply through OpenAI's merchant page and join a waitlist, and OpenAI says a self-serve merchant platform is planned.

How merchants are ranked for a product

When someone clicks a product, ChatGPT lists merchants that sell it. OpenAI says this considers availability, price, quality and whether the merchant is the maker or primary seller.

Search and crawling

Shopping research reads product pages directly and cites sources. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot won't appear in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links.

How to get your products into ChatGPT Shopping

  • Check crawler access. Make sure robots.txt and your firewall or CDN allow OAI-SearchBot to reach product and category pages.
  • Use your platform's integration. If you're on Shopify or Etsy, your catalog is already connected, according to OpenAI. Keep your product data complete there.
  • Apply for a direct feed. Other merchants can apply through OpenAI's merchant page. OpenAI's product feed spec defines required and optional fields, and richer data such as images, pricing and reviews helps products display accurately.
  • Keep data in sync. Price and availability should match your site. OpenAI notes prices from third-party providers can lag updates.
  • Strengthen reviews and coverage. Reviews and third-party content feed into recommendations, so encourage genuine reviews and earn coverage in relevant publications.
  • Mark up product pages. Accurate Product and Offer schema markup makes your details easier for any system to read.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

"You can pay to appear in product results." OpenAI says product results aren't ads and aren't influenced by partnerships. Ads in ChatGPT are a separate product.

"Instant Checkout is how you sell in ChatGPT." OpenAI said in March 2026 that the first version of Instant Checkout didn't offer enough flexibility, and it now points merchants to their own checkout. Merchants who want deeper integration can build ChatGPT apps.

"Only big retailers can take part." Shopify and Etsy sellers are integrated through their platforms, and other merchants can apply.

"A feed is all you need." Feeds matter, but ChatGPT also uses reviews, third-party content and product pages. Weak reputation or thin product pages can still hold you back.

"Visibility will turn up in Google Analytics on its own." Some shoppers click through, but many research in ChatGPT and buy later. Track AI referral traffic, and also watch branded search and direct sales.

ChatGPT Shopping vs. Google Shopping

Google Shopping draws mainly on Merchant Center feeds and includes paid Shopping ads alongside free listings. ChatGPT Shopping says its product results are organic, mixing merchant feeds with third-party data and web content in a conversational answer. Google is also adding agentic checkout to AI Mode through its Universal Commerce Protocol. For most retailers, the same foundations help in both: complete product data, accurate structured data and a strong reputation. See agentic commerce for how the protocols compare.

How Butter approaches ChatGPT Shopping

At Butter, ChatGPT is a core part of how we test AI visibility. Our GEO plan includes monthly AI prompt testing, where we run the questions your customers actually ask and record whether ChatGPT and other AI tools cite you. We pair that with indexing strategy, schema markup guidance, knowledge graph submissions and one AI-crawlable content citation and backlink each month. We don't manage product feeds or merchant applications, so that part stays with your team or commerce platform.

We also manage ads inside ChatGPT as an add-on for brands that want paid visibility there, which is separate from organic product results. You can see how it fits together on our GEO service page. We can't promise a citation or placement, but we can make sure nothing technical stands in the way.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT Shopping free for merchants?

OpenAI's merchant page says there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT. Product results are organic, and ads are a separate offering.

Mostly not anymore. OpenAI moved away from standalone Instant Checkout in 2026. Shoppers compare products in ChatGPT and complete purchases on merchant sites or apps, though some retailers, like Walmart, offer apps inside ChatGPT.

How does ChatGPT decide which products to show?

OpenAI says it picks relevant products based on the query and context, weighing factors like price, reviews and ease of use. Product data comes from merchant feeds, third-party providers and other web content.

Is ChatGPT Shopping available outside the US?

OpenAI's merchant page says shopping is currently live only for US users, with plans to expand to more regions and merchants over time.
