ChatGPT Search

THE SHORT ANSWER

ChatGPT Search is the web search feature built into ChatGPT that retrieves current web pages and answers questions with inline citations and a sources panel, available on all plans including Free as of 2026.

ChatGPT Search is the web search capability built into ChatGPT. When a question needs current information, ChatGPT can search the web, read relevant pages, and write an answer with links to its sources, all inside the same conversation.

For marketers, that makes ChatGPT a discovery channel, not just a writing tool. People ask it for product recommendations, vendor comparisons and how-to advice, and the sites it cites get both visibility and clicks. This guide covers how ChatGPT Search works, how your site becomes eligible, and how to improve your chances of being cited.

What is ChatGPT Search?

ChatGPT Search is OpenAI's feature that lets ChatGPT pull in live web results and cite them in its answers. OpenAI launched it on October 31, 2024 for paid users, opened it to all logged-in users in December 2024, and made it available without signing in from February 2025. Before launch, it was tested as a prototype called SearchGPT.

As of October 2026, OpenAI's help center says web search is available on every ChatGPT plan, including Free, and to people who aren't logged in, on web, desktop and mobile. ChatGPT can decide to search on its own when a question would benefit from current information, or users can start a search manually from the tools menu.

ChatGPT Search is one example of an AI search engine: instead of returning a ranked list of links, it returns a written answer grounded in sources, with citations users can click.

Why ChatGPT Search matters

ChatGPT is one of the most used AI assistants in the world, and search turns it into a place where buying research happens. When someone asks "what's the best payroll software for a restaurant with 30 employees," the answer may name a few vendors and link to a few pages. Being one of those names is a new form of visibility that doesn't show up in traditional rank tracking.

It also creates a measurable traffic source. Visits from ChatGPT citations are a form of AI referral traffic, and you can see them in your analytics when users click through. And because ChatGPT rewrites conversational questions into targeted searches, specific, well-structured pages have a chance even if they don't rank first on Google.

How ChatGPT Search works

OpenAI has shared the broad mechanics in its help documentation. The exact ranking logic isn't public.

Deciding to search

ChatGPT first decides whether a question needs fresh information. Questions about news, prices, products, local businesses or recent events are more likely to trigger a search. Questions it can answer from its training, like explaining a concept, may not.

Query rewriting and search providers

When it searches, ChatGPT typically rewrites the user's question into one or more targeted queries and sends them to search providers, then may send follow-up queries after reviewing the first results. OpenAI says it works with third-party search providers, and its help page links to privacy policies from Microsoft and Shopify. It may also use general location, derived from IP address, to improve local results.

Reading pages and citing sources

ChatGPT reads the retrieved pages and writes an answer, adding inline citations and a Sources panel with cited and related links. This process of tying an answer to retrieved documents is called grounding. OpenAI warns users that results can still be incomplete or wrong, so citations matter for trust.

OpenAI's crawlers

OpenAI documents several user agents, each controlled independently in robots.txt. These three matter most for publishers (a fourth, OAI-AdsBot, checks ad landing pages):

  • OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features. This is the one that controls search inclusion.
  • GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's foundation models.
  • ChatGPT-User visits pages when a user's request requires it. It is not used for automatic crawling and doesn't determine search inclusion.

How to get cited in ChatGPT Search

OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed and ranking uses multiple factors. Still, these steps cover what you can control.

  1. Allow OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI's help center says your site must allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl it, and your host or CDN must allow traffic from OpenAI's published IP addresses. Check robots.txt and any bot-protection settings on Cloudflare or similar services.
  2. Decide on GPTBot separately. You can allow OAI-SearchBot for search while blocking GPTBot if you don't want your content used for training. The two settings are independent.
  3. Make sure you're findable by search providers. Because ChatGPT relies partly on third-party search providers, strong indexing in traditional search engines, including Bing, helps. Submit sitemaps and fix crawl errors.
  4. Write answer-first content. Open each section with a clear, quotable answer, then add depth. Pages that directly answer specific questions are easier to cite than vague overviews.
  5. Cover comparisons and specifics. Many ChatGPT queries are evaluative: "X vs. Y," "best for," "how much does it cost." Honest comparison pages, transparent pricing and clear use cases give the model something concrete to cite.
  6. Build mentions beyond your own site. Earned coverage, reviews and brand mentions on reputable sites give ChatGPT more independent sources that reference you.
  7. Keep content fresh and dated. Searches often target current information. Update key pages and show clear publish or update dates.

ChatGPT Search in practice

Imagine a regional accounting firm that wants to appear when small business owners ask ChatGPT about quarterly tax deadlines. A practical plan would be: confirm OAI-SearchBot isn't blocked by robots.txt or the firm's CDN, publish a clear deadlines page with a short answer at the top and a dated update note, add a page answering common follow-ups (penalties, estimated payments, extensions), and track a fixed set of test prompts monthly to see whether the firm is cited. There's no guarantee of a citation, but each step removes a reason not to be one.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

  • Blocking GPTBot and assuming you've left ChatGPT Search. GPTBot controls training. OAI-SearchBot controls search inclusion. Mixing them up can either block you from search by accident or leave you in when you meant to opt out.
  • Forgetting the firewall. A robots.txt allow rule doesn't help if your CDN blocks OpenAI's IP ranges.
  • Thinking ChatGPT only uses its training data. With search, answers can reflect pages published recently, so fresh content can matter quickly.
  • Expecting instant changes. OpenAI notes robots.txt changes for search can take about 24 hours to take effect, and citations shift as content and queries change.
  • Measuring only clicks. Some users read the answer and never click. Track how often your brand is mentioned and cited, not just referral visits.

How Butter approaches ChatGPT Search

At Butter, ChatGPT Search is a core part of how we test AI visibility. Our GEO plan includes monthly AI prompt testing, where we run the questions your customers actually ask and record whether ChatGPT and other AI tools cite you. We pair that with indexing strategy, schema markup guidance, knowledge graph submissions and one AI-crawlable content citation and backlink each month. We also manage ads inside ChatGPT as an add-on for brands that want paid visibility there. You can see how it fits together on our GEO service page. We can't promise a citation, but we can make sure nothing technical stands in the way.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT Search free?

Yes. As of October 2026, OpenAI says web search is available on all ChatGPT plans, including Free, and to users who aren't signed in. Searches count against each plan's usage limits.

How do I get my website into ChatGPT Search?

Allow OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt file and make sure your host or CDN doesn't block OpenAI's published IP addresses. After that, clear, specific, well-indexed content gives you the best chance of being cited. OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed.

Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT Search?

No. GPTBot is used for model training, while OAI-SearchBot controls search inclusion. You can block one and allow the other, since each robots.txt setting is independent.

Can I track traffic from ChatGPT Search?

Yes, when users click a citation, the visit usually shows in your analytics as referral traffic from ChatGPT. Mentions without clicks won't appear there, so pair analytics with regular prompt testing.
