Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content and building your reputation so that answer engines, the tools that respond to questions with a direct answer, pick your information and credit your brand. Today that mostly means AI assistants and AI search features, but the idea started earlier with featured snippets and voice assistants.
AEO is one of several overlapping labels for the same shift in search: people asking full questions and getting a single answer back. Understanding what it covers, and what it doesn't, will help you sort useful advice from hype.
What is answer engine optimization?
An answer engine is any system that tries to answer a question directly instead of handing you a list of links. Google's featured snippets and voice assistants were early examples. Today, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are the main ones.
AEO is the work of making your content the answer, or one of the cited sources behind it. Semrush defines AEO as a set of practices for increasing a brand's visibility in AI-generated answers, where a brand is either included or left out.
In practice, AEO and generative engine optimization (GEO) are used almost interchangeably in 2026. Some people use AEO for the question-and-answer formatting side and GEO for the broader AI visibility program. Google's own guide to generative AI search names both terms and says that, for Google, optimizing for AI search is still SEO.
Why AEO matters
When an answer appears directly on the screen, fewer people click through to websites. A Pew Research Center analysis found that Google users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits to pages with an AI summary, compared with 15% without one. If the answer itself is where attention goes, being part of it matters.
Answer engines also compress choice. A results page offers ten or more options. An AI answer might name three products or cite four sources. If you aren't among them, the searcher may never know you exist.
Finally, AEO protects accuracy. AI tools sometimes summarize a business using outdated or third-party information. Publishing clear, current, direct answers about your own products and policies gives those tools better material to work with.
How answer engine optimization works
AEO isn't a single technique. It combines content structure, technical access and reputation, aimed at how answer engines find and choose information.
Understanding the questions
AEO starts with the real questions your audience asks, including long, conversational ones. Sources include sales calls, support tickets, site search, "People also ask" boxes and community forums. Thinking in questions also helps you match keyword intent.
Writing answer-first content
Answer engines need passages they can lift or summarize accurately. That favors content that states the answer early, then explains it. Clear headings phrased as questions, short definitions, lists and steps all make the key information easy to locate. Bing's AI Performance guidance specifically mentions clear headings, tables and FAQ sections.
Being reachable and indexable
Most AI answers are grounded in live search results. Google says a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear as a link in its AI features. OpenAI says its OAI-SearchBot must be allowed for content to appear in ChatGPT search answers.
Earning trust signals
Answer engines prefer sources that look reliable. That includes accurate, well-supported content, clear authorship and consistent mentions of your brand on reputable third-party sites, which is where a brand mention strategy fits in.
AEO in practice: a hypothetical example
Consider a small accounting firm that wants to show up when local business owners ask AI tools about quarterly estimated taxes. Its existing blog post is a 2,000-word essay that doesn't define anything until the fourth paragraph.
An AEO-minded rewrite would open with a two-sentence answer to "Who needs to pay quarterly estimated taxes?" Then it would add question-based subheadings such as "When are estimated tax payments due?" and "What happens if I miss a payment?" Each would start with a direct answer and link to the relevant IRS page for the official rules.
The firm also adds a clear author byline with credentials, makes sure its Google Business Profile is complete and checks that AI crawlers aren't blocked. After that, the team asks the same handful of questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google every month to see whether the firm is cited. There's no guarantee it will be, but the page is now far easier to quote correctly.
AEO best practices
- Build a question inventory. List the 20 to 50 questions that matter most to buyers and map each to a page that answers it best.
- Lead with the answer. Put a clear, self-contained answer in the first sentence or two of each section, then add depth, examples and caveats.
- Use descriptive, question-style headings. Keep a logical H2 and H3 hierarchy so readers and machines can find the right passage.
- Show your expertise. Add first-hand experience, original data, author bios and links to primary sources. Google's guidance on helpful, people-first content applies here.
- Keep facts current. Update prices, statistics and policies, and show a visible "last updated" date when it's genuine.
- Use structured data honestly. Schema markup helps search engines understand a page, but it must match visible content. Note that Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026, so FAQ markup no longer produces that display in Google.
- Check crawler access. Make sure Googlebot, Bingbot and AI search crawlers can reach your important pages.
- Test real prompts regularly. Track whether you're mentioned or cited across several answer engines over time, since single answers vary.
Common AEO mistakes and misconceptions
- Treating AEO as separate from SEO. Answer engines lean heavily on search indexes. Weak SEO fundamentals undercut AEO.
- Writing robotic Q&A pages. Stuffing pages with dozens of thin questions for every variation doesn't help readers. Google warns that mass-producing pages to manipulate AI responses can violate its spam policies.
- Chasing tricks over substance. Google says special AI files, chunking content into tiny pieces and rewriting content just for AI aren't needed for its AI features.
- Expecting markup to guarantee placement. Google says you can't mark up a page to become a featured snippet, and the same logic applies to AI answers.
- Measuring only clicks. AEO success often shows up as citations and mentions before it shows up as traffic.
AEO vs. GEO vs. SEO
SEO is the broad discipline of earning visibility in search engines. AEO focuses on being the direct answer to a question, a goal that dates back to featured snippets and voice search. GEO focuses on visibility inside AI-generated responses specifically, a term popularized by a 2023 research paper on generative engines. In 2026 the overlap is so large that most teams run them as one program. The labels matter less than doing the fundamentals well.
How Butter approaches AEO
At Butter, we don't sell AEO as a separate trick. We fold it into GEO and SEO work, because the questions your buyers ask AI tools are the same ones they type into Google. Our GEO plan includes monthly AI prompt testing across answer engines, so we can see whether you're mentioned or cited for those questions and how that changes over time.
Based on what we find, we give on-page recommendations, like restructuring pages to answer key questions up front, plus off-page recommendations and schema markup guidance. Each month we also deliver one AI-crawlable content citation and one backlink, and handle knowledge graph submissions. Our founder, Mo Bozo, spent over a decade in SaaS growth and ran an SEO agency, and that experience shapes our focus on practical, honest work. We won't promise you'll be "the answer," but we'll make you easier to choose. You can see how the plans compare on our pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO different from GEO?
Mostly in emphasis. AEO grew out of optimizing for featured snippets and voice assistants, while GEO comes from research on AI-generated search answers. In 2026 the terms are often used interchangeably.
Which platforms count as answer engines?
Common examples include Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Claude and Gemini. Featured snippets and voice assistants are earlier forms of answer engines.
Does FAQ schema still help with AEO?
Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search in May 2026, so FAQ markup no longer creates that visual feature in Google. A clear, well-written FAQ section on the page can still help readers and make answers easy to find.
How do I know if AEO is working?
Track a consistent set of questions across several answer engines and record when your brand is mentioned or cited. Also watch Search Console's generative AI report, Bing's AI Performance report and AI referral traffic in your analytics.
