Ecommerce Marketing

THE SHORT ANSWER

Ecommerce marketing is everything an online store does to attract shoppers, convert them and bring them back, across search, shopping listings and ads, marketplaces, social, email, SMS, reviews and AI shopping assistants.

Ecommerce marketing is everything an online store does to attract shoppers, turn them into buyers and bring them back. It includes search, shopping ads and free product listings, marketplaces, social media, email and text messages, reviews, and the AI shopping assistants that now recommend products.

For a store, the stakes are direct: every channel competes for the same shopper, often against marketplaces and much larger brands. Stores that keep their product data accurate, earn repeat customers and follow the rules on reviews, shipping and messaging tend to spend less to win each sale.

What is ecommerce marketing?

Ecommerce marketing covers the full path from discovery to repeat purchase for products sold online. It has three broad parts. Acquisition brings new shoppers in through search, ads, marketplaces, social and affiliates. Conversion turns visits into orders through product pages, reviews, shipping clarity and a smooth checkout. Retention brings customers back through email, SMS, loyalty programs and good service.

Ecommerce SEO is one part of this: making category and product pages visible in organic search. Ecommerce marketing is the wider job that SEO sits inside, including paid channels, owned channels and everything that happens after the first order.

Why ecommerce marketing matters

Online sales keep growing. The US Census Bureau estimated, in its August 2026 release, that seasonally adjusted retail ecommerce sales reached $340.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026. That was 17.1% of total retail sales and up 12.2% from the same quarter in 2025. Census revises these estimates over time, so treat them as the latest snapshot.

AI assistants are a new storefront. OpenAI's help article on shopping in ChatGPT says product results "are selected independently" and are not ads, based on factors like the shopper's query, price and product metadata. Shopify merchants are included through Shopify Catalog, and other merchants can apply for direct product feed access. That makes ChatGPT shopping one more place where clean product data pays off, and it matters even more as agentic commerce lets AI tools help complete purchases.

Repeat customers carry the business. Paid acquisition gets expensive quickly. Stores that earn a second and third order from the same customer spread that cost across more sales.

How ecommerce marketing works

Product data is the foundation

Most channels run on the same product information: titles, images, prices, availability, shipping and returns. Google's free listings documentation says products submitted through Merchant Center can appear across Google Search, the Shopping tab, Google Images and Lens, YouTube, Maps and Gemini. Core attributes like ID, title, link, image, price, description and availability are required, and shipping settings are mandatory in many countries, including the US. The same feed also powers Shopping ads.

Marketplaces and social commerce

Many stores sell on marketplaces as well as their own site, and on social platforms with built-in shopping. These channels bring reach but come with fees, their own ranking rules and less control over the customer relationship. Most stores use them alongside, not instead of, their own site.

Email and text messages

Email and SMS are usually a store's most direct retention channels. Commercial email must follow the CAN-SPAM Act, including a working opt-out. Texts carry stricter rules. Under the FCC's TCPA rules at 47 CFR 64.1200, marketing calls made with an autodialer or prerecorded voice to mobile numbers need the recipient's prior express written consent, and the FCC treats marketing texts as calls under these rules. Since April 11, 2025, people can revoke consent by any reasonable method, including replying "stop," and requests must be honored within 10 business days.

Reviews

Reviews shape both conversion and how AI tools describe products. The FTC's final rule on fake reviews, announced in August 2024, bans fake or AI-generated reviews, incentives conditioned on positive or negative sentiment, undisclosed insider reviews and review suppression through threats or intimidation.

Shipping promises

Delivery claims are marketing claims. Under the FTC's Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, you need a reasonable basis for any shipping time you state, or for shipping within 30 days if you state none. If you can't ship on time, you must tell the customer and offer the option to cancel for a refund. This entry is not legal advice, and state rules can add requirements.

Ecommerce marketing in practice: an example

Picture a hypothetical store that sells specialty coffee equipment. Most of its sales come from paid social ads, and rising ad costs are squeezing margins.

The team starts with product data. It fixes missing GTINs, adds shipping and return settings in Merchant Center, and makes sure prices match on the site and in the feed. Free listings start showing its grinders in the Shopping tab and image results.

Next, it adds a post-purchase email series: brewing tips after delivery, a review request a few weeks later and a reminder when filters usually run out. It adds an SMS option at checkout with a clear consent checkbox and "Reply STOP to opt out" in every message. The review request never offers a discount for a positive rating.

Finally, it writes buying guides comparing grinder types and tests questions like "best burr grinder under $200" in AI assistants to see which stores come up. Over time, the store relies less on paid social.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

"Ads are the whole strategy." Paid channels can scale quickly, but without retention and organic visibility, every sale costs the same to win again.

"The feed is a one-time setup." Prices, stock and shipping change constantly. Out-of-date feeds can lead to disapproved products and unhappy customers.

"Reviews are fair game to manage." Buying positive reviews, posting staff reviews without disclosure or pressuring people to remove negative ones can violate the FTC's rule.

"A checkbox buried in the terms counts as text consent." Marketing texts generally need clear, prior express written consent, and opt-outs must be honored.

Ecommerce marketing vs. ecommerce SEO

Ecommerce SEO is about earning organic visibility for product and category pages through site structure, schema markup, product content and feeds. Ecommerce marketing includes that work, plus paid ads, marketplaces, social, email, SMS, reviews, pricing and promotions, and customer retention. A strong SEO program makes the rest of ecommerce marketing cheaper, but it isn't the whole plan.

How Butter approaches ecommerce marketing

Our plans work for online stores on the search and AI visibility side. Monthly AI prompt testing shows whether AI tools mention your products and store for the questions shoppers ask, and our schema markup guidance covers types like Product so systems can read your catalog. On the GEO+SEO plan, unlimited on-page optimization, technical SEO fixes for crawl issues and 8 AI-generated articles a month support category pages and buying guides. For paid reach inside AI tools, we manage AI Ads inside ChatGPT as an add-on.

Email and SMS programs, marketplace management and Shopping ad campaigns aren't part of our plans. Our SEO services page explains what is included.

Frequently asked questions

Is ecommerce marketing the same as ecommerce SEO?

No. Ecommerce SEO focuses on organic search visibility for a store's pages. Ecommerce marketing is broader and also covers ads, marketplaces, social, email, SMS, reviews and retention.

Which channels should a new online store start with?

Start with accurate product data and a Merchant Center account, since free listings cost nothing. Add an email list from day one, then test one paid channel at a time and keep the ones that bring profitable, repeat customers.

Do I need consent to send marketing texts?

Generally, yes. FCC rules require prior express written consent for autodialed marketing messages to mobile numbers, and people can opt out by replying words like "stop." This is not legal advice, so check with counsel.

How do AI shopping assistants choose products?

OpenAI says ChatGPT selects product results independently based on the shopper's query, context, price and product metadata, and that they are not ads. Accurate, detailed product data and strong reviews give these tools more to work with.
